In The Bleak Midwinter

from Christmas by Tangled Blue

/

about

Recorded in our living room with 17 friends and family in the autumn of 2011. We didn't grow up with this hymn tune, but it's becoming one of our favorites. The lyrics are by the English poet Christina Georgina Rossetti - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina_Rossetti

The melody is by Gustav Holst. The photo is by Micah Taylor - micahtaylor.com

lyrics

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;
heav'n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign;
in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ.

What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb;
if I were a wise man I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him - give my heart.

Tangled Blue Minneapolis, Minnesota

With a new home in Minneapolis, Tangled Blue recorded "Advent" in 2008 and will finish a third project this year. ... more
