The Days Are Coming words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) The days are coming: when the voice of justice will be heard The days are coming: from a righteous branch, a sprout of David. The days are coming: the sky will rip and every nation quake. The days are coming: we will see the end of war. Raise up a banner for the nations. The Lord has made a proclamation. Raise up a banner for the nations. The Lord has made a proclamation. The days are coming: I will fulfill the promises I made. The days are coming: in these days, yes you will be saved. The days are coming: defuse the bomb and bend the sword. The days are coming: we will see the end of war. Raise up a banner for the nations. The Lord has made a proclamation. Raise up a banner for the nations. The Lord has made a proclamation. See, your Savior, He is coming, He is seeking, He is finding. Justice for the child soldier and the cooperate C.E.O. Justice for the president and captives in Guantanamo Justice for the perps and police and the people on the street Justice for those who run away; justice for those who seek Justice for the motherless and the widow Justice for those who reap what they did not sow Justice for the natives and for the alien Justice for the righteous and for those who live with sin The burden of proof will be lifted Proof will come in the air we breathe A Savior for all peoples Whose rule will never end Raise up a banner for the nations. The Lord has made a proclamation. Raise up a banner for the nations. The Lord has made a proclamation. See, your Savior, He is coming, He is seeking, He is finding.

Scan Me 03:18
Scan Me words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Re-member me, re-member me, Re-member me with your Love Memory, memory faded too quickly As foot falls in the fog just before the dawn We repeat, we repeat the path of least resistance Each time thinking it’s a new way we’ve found This world is fickle, talk is cheap, Write it down so I can see Show me your ways, truth to guide as a path I need a sign post that will last Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Re-member me, re-member me, Re-member me with your Love Sing the song, sing the song that called you from the darkness Let it resound all around and everywhere We repeat, We repeat the echo of the Spirit That is calling out with a shout and leaves us bare This is not an if/then statement, This is not a conditional clause You will be bound up when you are hurting With more than tape and gauze Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me into your memory. Scan me. Scan me.

The Lips of John words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) Some say you’re dead, others just really quiet Where is the fruit from your bed Or the work of your hand? Some say you’re lost, wandering in a desert Some say count the cost Of the days that are ahead The storm is coming, it’s breath blows hot It’s a furnace that cannot be sold or bought The sun, the moon, and all these things Are gonna fall away They’re gonna fall away... Some say you live and you’re coming very quickly There’s a voice up ahead Calling make this path straight With locusts for bread He could bite through any false pretense But he will lose his head For the same old song and dance And there’s wild honey for the lips of John But vinegar for the lips with an unending song If what I consume is just to dull the pain, Then let it fall away Let it fall away, let these addictions fall away... He leapt for joy once, he will do it again But this flood’s exposed his roots And the axe is sharpened His dad was struck dumb, now he’s in this cage I swear the vines of doubt snake from age through age Some say you’re a star, a light in this darkness You burn bright for sure, blinding those without need Standing on this shore, Knowing this current is what cleans Though you hold no cure, you’ve held fast in this stream And the Jordan runs muddy without a hint of grace. But it’s still cool and clean now upon your face Rub the scales now from your eyes, let them fall away And all that hinders here, let it fall away...

No More Far Away words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) My lover walks the street tonight looking for stars but the only lights that twinkle here Are in the north bound cars maybe they’re hidden, maybe there they’ll stay, maybe they’ve fallen far away My true love’s gone to bed now, I’m waiting for sleep Orbison’s “only the lonely” is beginning to creep From somewhere in the distance Through air that’s thick as the beams that holds back the light From cutting through the seams of somewhere... of somewhere She will rise up in the night to seek out the place the boarded up building of my heart where I’ve hidden my face from the coming light that is about to break and draw to it every far away no more far away, no more far away When we get there, there’ll be no waiting When we get there, no hesitating When we get there, I will shout Let it out, come on let it out, No more far away, no more far away When there gets here, there will be everywhere When there gets here, there will be everywhere For all time, everywhere, no more far away, No more far away My lover walks the streets tonight, she’s looking for stars

Leaving Minnesota words and music by Aimée Pakan © 2008 Twisted True Music (ASCAP) Leaving Minnesota with a lump in my throat A closed heart, a closed door and some joy that’s on loan Thoughts are churning in my head As the miles go by, road keeps the time These haunted musings taint my heart, My soul, this time And this hurts worse than standing naked In the cold december, cold december snow Leaving Minnesota, looming blizzard in the sky rear view mirror fogs up as the tears cloud my eyes Reliving conversations in my head again, it’s got to end Choices made, our paths were paved as grief comes ‘round the bend And this hurts worse than standing naked In the cold december, cold december snow Heartache be gone and darkness go find another home Sorrow, you know there’s tomorrow and grief be gone, send a new song Renew my mind, love send the hope I’m longing for ‘Cause I don’t need you here, don’t want you here Don’t need you here anymore Leaving Minnesota, Leaving Minnesota Leaving Minnesota behind

In His Name 03:38
In His Name words and music by Joel Pakan; written for Nick in 1996 © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) My mind fumbles with the foolishness of God Even on a good day And this foolishness leads me to one Who brings me to say It’s in his name, in his name Sweet mystery blanketed divine, Thrown into this fray So as angles danced and sang in awed wonder, So they do again today In his name, in his name So what will we find, When we turn the pages of his mind Countless blessings in disguise, Here we find we are in his name Words of wisdom escape me tonight As I hold your head But if loneliness becomes your home Let Him warm your bed In His name, in His name, we are in His name

Do No Harm 03:42
Do No Harm words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) Early in this morning, Day’s light promised, not yet here Warmth of my anticipation Meets the chill of fallen air Burden of these dark deeds Rakes my dreams, ruins my sight The hour has come for waking, Even in this mid-night, even in this mid-night Hey yeah, this is the dark before the dawn Hey yeah, this is the chill before the warm When the promise of love can do no harm Step out to find a new path, Blazing a trail, no, following where the wind has blown Led now to the waters edge As if called to some distant home Hey yeah, this is the dark before the dawn Hey yeah, this is the chill before the warm When the promise of love can do no harm, Love will do no harm Following the shoreline, See how the tide swept this path clear No, I am not alone now, This tide has drawn the thirsty near

Angel Song 03:09
Angel Song words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) Yeah, yeah, yeah, she sees an angel, She even knows it’s name Though fame may be her only earthly fortune She will guard it lest they call her insane Troubled and trembling, The word of the ascended comforts this girl Yeah, yeah, yeah he sees an angel, He meets it in his dreams This counsel he holds is bright As light that comes sifting through the seams He wakes up with this word, He echoes what he’s heard, “God with us” He takes her home now, Though some would say too soon Time’s growing short now, as joy leapt in her womb A new song is building, it is upon her lips “The humble lifted, the hungry fed, and my soul glorifies the Lord.” Yeah, yeah, yeah I see an angel Hung by a golden noose on a tree Lit up by electric light and holy written word Hope rekindled, this prayer has been heard Come quickly, come quickly Lord, come quickly…

Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending words by Charles Wesley, the music is a traditional English folk melody called Picardy First Published in 1758, this song is in the public domain. This arrangement © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) Lo He comes with clouds descending Once for every sinner slain Thousand thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of his train Alleluia, Alleluia Christ the Lord returns to reign Every eye shall now behold him Robed in glorious majesty Those who set at naught and sold him Pierced and nailed him to the tree Deeply wailing, deeply wailing Shall their true messiah see Those true tokens of his passion Still his dazzling body bears Cause of endless exultation To his ransomed worshipers With what rapture, with what rapture Gaze we on those glorious scars Alleluia Alleluia... Yea Amen let all adore thee High on thy eternal throne Savior take the power and glory Claim the kingdom for thine own Alleluia, alleluia Thou shall reign and thou alone, thou alone Alleluia Alleluia...

Parade 04:48
Parade words and music by Joel Pakan © 2008 Subtle Conversation Music (ASCAP) Memory of summer, and the marches of independence Cold wind breaks in, proclaims the impending sentence There’s a parade passing by my window But the clamor is nothing to fear So raise your glass, let’s drink, for the time is drawing near Raise your glass, let’s drink, for the time is drawing near There will be signs in the sun, signs in moon and stars Signs in the sea, so be alert, and be on guard Though these will not tell you the timing They will tell you the time just the same So raise your voice, let’s sing, for what was once will be again Raise your voice, let’s sing, for what was once will come again The moment is late, well past the hour of closing The music has faded, the tap has ceased it’s flowing And down the drain pipe echoes syllables from stone, beast, and air So raise your hands, let’s dance, for the time is drawing near Raise your hands, let’s dance, for the time is drawing near There’re shouts in the street, a maze of minds in motion The bride-groom arrives treading the threaded streets of devotion And there’s a parade passing by my window But the clamor is nothing to fear So raise your glass, let’s drink Raise your voice, let’s sing Raise your hands, let’s dance, for the time is drawing near Come on let’s dance for the time is always here.

about

It’s a Tuesday afternoon on a hot summer day in
South Dakota (July 22, 2008).Our trusty VW Eurovan
now has 316,000 miles on the odometer, and we are
longing for our new home town of Minneapolis and a
night in our own bed. In our imaginations, the scenes
that correspond to this sense of longing are the
landscapes of the Dakotas. This set of songs, based on
the readings and themes of the Advent season
(those 40 days before Christmas now obscured and
somehow intensified by the culture of commerce in the
country of our birth), is the most complex work we’ve
ever attempted. The tension that is explicit in the season
of Advent forced us to write in new ways and re-address
who we are and why we make music.

These songs were written and recorded all across the
country, but a majority of it was conceived and completed
in South Dakota. Special thanks to all of the folks who
let us record in their homes and lodges over the last
couple years, the staff at Outlaw Ranch and Camp
NeSoDak, the Rohr family in South Dakota, our parents in
Ohio and Wisconsin, The Stevens family in Washington,
the Johnson’s in Texas, and St. Luke’s in Manhattan, KS.

Thank you for supporting us and the music we make by
buying this CD and bringing us to your town to perform.
Without you this music would not exist, we would not
have crisscrossed the country many times (a journey we
genuinely love), and we would not be able to start this new
adventure known as “home ownership”. Your generosity
continually moves us, thank you!

We had the pleasure of working with a number of talented
folks on this project. Rob Ticherich played drums and rattled
the picture frames on three songs. Jacob Peterson did all of the
graphic design. You can find Jacob online at 5jdesign.com.
This recording was printed and duplicated by the fine folks
at Noiseland Industries. They are simply the best; find out
more at noiseland.com.

You can find all of our recordings, journals and photos from
the road at tangledblue.com, and look for us on Facebook.
We love to hear from you, and look forward to the next
time we can share a place, a cup, and a conversation.

about

Tangled Blue Minneapolis, Minnesota

Since June of 2000, Aimee and Joel have been making music together. Their first CD was completed in 2003. Recorded at a farm house in Wisconsin, it is a caffeinated, folk-rock blend of songs that have shown their durability as the duo traveled with them over 500,000 miles of highways. With a new home in Minneapolis, Tangled Blue recorded "Advent" in 2008 and will finish a third project this year. ... more
